Wanderer’s Journal: Through the Forest

Hello, fair Scribblers! I’d like to introduce new segment: the “Wanderer’s Journal”! This is going to be a re-ocurring series with observations and interesting things I’ve learned while wandering across the realms.

One of my favourite things to explore on my travels are the different forests and woods of the world. There’s just something about the feeling of a forest, simultaneously ancient and teeming with life, that captures the imagination.

Iyasteran Winter Traditions

Every culture has a set of traditions surrounding the midwinter season: it’s the darkest time of the year that we humans have been illuminating with light and life throughout history. We come together to enjoy the fruits of the harvest that we had saved for the winter, we celebrate with candles, bonfires, and twinkling lights, we bring evergreen into our homes to remind ourselves of the coming spring…and our friends in Iyastera have their midwinter rituals too! Can you guess which real-life practices inspired each kingdom’s traditions?

Awarding Experience

There are a lot of things to love about “the world’s greatest role playing game”, the heroes and the villains, the treasure found and friends made along the way…but nothing so valuable as the party’s evolution from humble beginnings to champions of legend. Narratively, it’s fairly easy to see this change. New perspectives and growth with each battle, newly gained knowledge with each NPC interaction…and mechanically, the excitement that builds up when it’s time to ascend to the next level is pretty hard to beat. But while choosing your new spells and abilities is thrilling, finding the best way to quantify this progression is another matter entirely.
